I prescribe Accutane every single day in my practice. Hereβs what I tell all of my patients going into fall!
Lip Dryness
πLip dryness is easily the most common complaint I hear on Accutane. Apply heavy occlusives like plain petrolatum or Aquaphor and extend slightly past the lip line, multiple times a day.
Some patients may need a small amount of topical antiinflammatory medication for more intense rashes around the lips. Talk to your doctor.
βAVOID lip licking, and AVOID products including irritants and allergens like mint/menthol, eucalyptus, fragrance, or anything plumping.
βNo lip scrubs.
Nasal Dryness/Nosebleeds
πNosebleeds are common on Accutane due to dryness of the nasal mucosa. Sit upright, lean forward, and hold pressure on the bridge of the nose for 10 minutes. Ice can also help to temporarily vasoconstrict (narrow blood vessels).
π€§To prevent: nasal saline gels and nasal saline sprays can be really helpful here. Think about moisturizing your nose like you moisturize your body – bathe (with saline spray) and immediately moisturize (with Vaseline). Consider a humidifier at night (but please clean it).
β If you do get a nosebleed, hold consistent pressure to stop the bleeding. No releasing to peek!
Facial Dryness
βΉοΈ My patients with acne are often afraid to use thick moisturizers on the face. On Accutane we need barrier-repairing ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, and humectants like hyaluronic acid. I also recommend that my drier patients transition to a triple lipid. (And throw in a little Vaseline around the nose and lips.)
β Donβt scrub off or aggressively exfoliate dry skin.
Body Dryness
π§΄When it comes to moisturizers, boring is best.
β Donβt spend your life savings.
Bonus: Fish Oil
π Fish oil contains omega 3 fatty acids, which help maintain your skin barrier and prevent transepidermal water loss. Clinical studies show that 1g per day can cut Accutane-related dryness in half.
β Always consult with your doctor before starting any new supplement.
What’s the Vista View?
Accutane is highly effective but comes with real side effects, especially during dry weather transitions.
